It’s been just over 36 years since the first laparoscopic removal of an appendix was performed in Germany, which caused such controversy that the then-president of the German Surgical Society ordered that the surgeon be suspended from medical practice.

Today, over 10 million laparoscopic procedures are undertaken each year and over 750,000 of them are conducted by the Da Vinci surgical robot, which shows that robots play an increasing role in the surgery industry. Robotic surgery is controlled by a human surgeon, leading to more efficient and accurate tasks. Also, if robots can improve visualization and dexterity, and deliver better outcomes, the procedure times may be shorter.
